Gordon Cook, Beattyville, has taken office as the 86th Potentate of Oleika Shrine Temple.
A professional educator, Gordon Cook retired from the Kentucky Department of Education in 1991, after 17 years of service. Prior to joining the office of instruction, he served as Principal of Lee County High School from 1964 to 1973.
Cook married Mildred Anne Smithers of Irvine, Kentucky in 1952. Their sons Tim, Fred, Greg, and daughter Cynthia are graduates of Lee County High School. Mildred Anne served as Home Economics teacher at Lee County High School for 27 years, she retired in 1991. The Cooks pride and joy are their grandchildren: Amanda and Ashley from Atlanta, Georgia and Travis from Corbin.
Cook is a 42 year member of Proctor Lodge #213 F&AM, where he has served as Master of the Lodge in 1989. He became a Scottish Rite Mason in 1959, York Rite Mason in 1991, joined the shrine in 1978. He has been an active member of Oleika Temple and was President of the Lee County Shrine Club 1984 through 1986. After serving in several appointed offices and being named membership chairman in 1987 and 88, Cook was elected to the divan editorial guide in 1989.
Gordon and his lady are members of St Thomas Episcopal Church, Beattyville, and both have served on the Bishops Committee and also as delegates to the Annual Diocese of Lexington Episcopal Church Convention.
Gordon and lady Mildred Anne have served as Worthy Patron and Worthy Matron of Beattyville Chapter 231 Order of the Eastern Star. A veteran of WWII and Korean Conflict, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel AUS in 1987. For 33 years he has been on active and reserve service. |
