John Chaney was born November 1, 1958 in the queen city of the mountains: Hazard, Kentucky. His educational experiences are vast, beginning with his attendance at Hazard High School. He would then, pursue higher education beginning at Hazard Community College, where he achieved his Associates in Science with honors. He would continue his education by obtaining a Bachelor's of General Studies degree after only one additional year of college at the University of Kentucky. Three years later, he was awarded the Bachelor's of Pharmacology from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. John married Velma Hensley in 1978. The couple have two daughters: Heather Chaney Hall and Jamie Chaney Fletcher, both are attending college in pursuit of higher education. John is also a very proud grandparent. After his collegiate experiences, he immediately returned to the area he calls home, starting work as an independent pharmacist, serving the needs of the mountain people. His resume does not only include pharmacy as a job description. John became a Master Mason in 1981 at Hazard Lodge 676, and has served as master of his Lodge. Other Masonic activities include: Past director of the Oleika Clowns, Rabban of Clan 31, member of the Easter Star, York Rite, Life member of the Scottish Rite, KCCH, and Life Member of Royal Order Scotland. John was created a Noble in September of 2000, hence serving as president of Hazard Shrine Club in 2002. He also started the Hazard Van Patrol, honoring our van drivers who are given the great task of transporting our children. Currently he serves as a Vice President of the South Atlantic Shrine Association. Other duties outside the Shrine include; Board Member of the Kentucky River District Health Department for the State of Kentucky, a board member of the Hospitality House, which at no cost to Appalachian families provides room and board for them while a family member is admitted to a Central Kentucky Hospital. John's accomplishments doesn't stop there. He has been privileged to be Santa Clause for the Children at the Shriners Childrens Hospital on Christmas morning. John has served as wing commander for the Civil Air Patrol single and milti-engine airplanes, helicopter pilot for search and rescue, and honorary National Guardsman. John has also instructed S.C.U.B.A. classes for individuals, as well as, government officials, including search and rescue, with endorsements as Master Diver and Cave Specialists. John also is an Amateur Radio Operator. John will serve Oleika in 2007 as your Centennial Potentate, and his number one aspiration is making "OUR CHILDREN FIRST". |
