On Saturday, October 4, 2008 the Leslie County Cycling Fezzes participated in the Mary Breckenridge Parade in Hyden, Ky. President William Hoy Roberts and Larry Caldwell rode their small cycles. Vice-President Eugene Stewart and Frank W. Baker rode their Goldwing Trikes. J. C. Osborne and his son, J. C. Osborne II rode his truck. The parents of one of our Lexington Shriners Hospital patients wanted their daughter to ride in the parade. They decorated their truck and rode in the parade with us. I was so proud of these parents for wanting to let the public know that the Shriners are helping their child. While talking with the parents before the parade we decided to enter a Shriner float in the Mary Breckenridge Parade next year and allow any Shriner patients and one of their parents ride on the float with us. These parents are willing to pull the Shriner float for us. As we were going through Hyden, I heard the announcer, Ray Wilson, saying some very good comments about the Shriners and how we help children. Lonnie Hendrix, Mayor of Hyden, Kentucky, allowed the Leslie County Shrine Club to circulate among the vendors/visitors asking for donations for the Shriners. Many of the people made great comments about the Shriners. At least two adults said that the Shriners helped them when they were children. I told one of the ladies, who was helped by the Shriners, about the float idea for next year. She said that as a Shriner patient she would love to ride on the float. One man commented on the great job that we are doing. I told him that I appreciated his comments, but the people, who donate the money, are the ones who are to be commended. They are the ones who deserve all the credit, because without all their donations, we could do nothing; then I thanked him for the donation that he gave. As some of the Shriners were helping clean the streets of Hyden later that night, I saw Ray. I told him that I really thanked him for the good comments. Ray said, "I was only stating the facts." Below are some pictures that were taken during the parade:
